A Gift for Today and Tomorrow

A Gift for Today and Tomorrow
As U.S. Pacific Command J6, director of communications systems for the U.S. Army, Brig. Gen. Ron Bouchard '77 was at one time responsible for the communications command of half the world's surface — some 41 different countries and more than 100 million square miles. It's a position the Manchester native would never have dreamed he'd find himself in when he enrolled at UNH on a four-year ROTC full scholarship, the first member of his family to attend college. "It all goes back to my UNH degree and the ROTC," Bouchard says of a highly decorated career that spans almost 34 years in the Army and another five in the private sector as an information systems executive. "UNH made everything else possible."

Bouchard's gratitude is the reason he and his wife, Marcia, established the Brig. Gen. Ronald M. Bouchard and Dr. Marcia M. Bouchard PhD Endowed Scholarship Fund last year to support students in the university's Army ROTC program who have not received full ROTC scholarships. The funding of the Bouchards' scholarship is unique: they established it with a pledge, which they will pay out over five years, and they will add to their fund through their estate plan. That means they get to see the benefits of their philanthropy now — the first scholarship was awarded this fall — while knowing that their fund will increase in size later through their bequest. "It's truly a gift from the heart," says Marcia Bouchard. "It means so much to both of us to give back to UNH even a little bit of what it gave to Ron."

The Bouchards hope their example will inspire others to consider making a similar gift to benefit students today as well as in the future.
