Dr. Samuel C. Hughes '68

Dr. Samuel C. Hughes '68
During his lifetime, Sam Hughes '68 was a world-renowned specialist in obstetrical anesthesiology, a teacher at the University of California in San Francisco, and an attending physician at San Francisco General Hospital. When he died at age 61 from pancreatic cancer, Sam was remembered for his integrity, courage, and most of all, his compassion. His rare combination of authority and reassurance, his warm eyes and gentle hands, made him an angel to people in pain. He left a legacy of caring that lingers in the hearts of his patients, and in the minds of the hundreds of young doctors that he trained.

Sam also left a legacy to UNH, where he majored in pre-med and German. His family and friends say that Sam was careful and deliberate in all that he did and it was important to him to give back to the institutions that helped him along the way. His bequest created the Dr. Samuel C. Hughes Scholarship Fund, an endowment that provides scholarship assistance for students from the College of Liberal Arts who need financial help.

Each year and for decades to come, students will benefit from Sam's generosity, and his lifelong dedication to caring for people will live on forever—here in Durham and beyond.

Charitable bequests help sustain UNH's tradition of academic excellence and commitment to helping students through professorships, scholarships, and critical program support. A bequest of any amount will create meaningful change for future generations of UNH students.
